The Best of Crete in 3 Days
Greece’s largest island is a country of its own — Minoan palaces, Venetian harbour towns, plunging gorges and some of the Mediterranean’s most beautiful beaches. Three days can only scratch the surface, so this route focuses on the west (Chania) and centre (Heraklion & Knossos).
Best time to go: May–June or September–October. Getting around: Crete is huge — a rental car is essential to link the towns, gorges and beaches. With more days, add the east (Elounda, Spinalonga, Lasithi).
Day 1 — Chania & the Venetian west
Chania Old Town. A ravishing tangle of Venetian and Ottoman lanes wrapped around a horseshoe harbour that glows at sunset. Walk the breakwater to the elegant Venetian Lighthouse for the classic view back over the town.
Lunch — Tamam. A beloved Chania institution set in an old Turkish bathhouse, famous for spiced, slow-cooked dishes. In the evening, Thalassino Ageri serves fresh fish on a tiny cove with the waves at your feet.
Optional beach day trip. If you have the morning, the pink-sand lagoon of Elafonisi or the milky-blue shallows of Balos (by boat from Kissamos) are among Greece’s most spectacular beaches — but both are a long haul from Chania.
Day 2 — Knossos & Minoan Heraklion
Palace of Knossos. Europe’s oldest city and the labyrinthine seat of Minoan Crete, with its restored red columns and bull-leaping frescoes. Go early to beat the heat and the crowds.
Heraklion Archaeological Museum. The world’s finest Minoan collection under one roof — the Phaistos Disc, the Snake Goddess and the dazzling frescoes whose originals you just saw copied at Knossos.
Afternoon — the old harbour. Stroll out to the squat Venetian sea-fort, Koules Fortress, guarding Heraklion’s harbour. Dinner at Peskesi, a beautiful courtyard restaurant reviving ancient Cretan recipes with heirloom produce.
Day 3 — gorge, monastery or Renaissance town
For hikers — the Samaria Gorge. Europe’s longest gorge: a 16 km trek down sheer walls to the Libyan Sea, past the famous “Iron Gates” narrows. A full, demanding day — start at dawn.
For a gentler day — Rethymno & Arkadi. The best-preserved Renaissance old town in Crete, crowned by the vast Fortezza, paired with the serene, historically charged Arkadi Monastery in the hills.
Dinner — Avli or Ntounias. Rethymno’s flagship Avli pairs elevated Cretan cooking with a serious cellar; mountain taverna Ntounias cooks organic farm produce over wood fire in clay pots.
Best beaches on Crete
- Elafonisi & Balos — the pink and turquoise lagoons of the far west; iconic but remote.
- Falassarna — a long west-coast sweep famous for Libyan-Sea sunsets.
- Preveli — a palm-lined river mouth on the south coast; Vai has Europe’s largest natural palm grove in the east.
- Seitan Limania — a jaw-dropping aquamarine cove below cliffs near Chania.
