The Perfect 3 Days in Rhodes
The largest of the Dodecanese blends the biggest inhabited medieval town in Europe with clifftop ancient acropoleis, butterfly valleys and long sandy beaches. Here’s how to balance history and coast in three days.
Best time to go: May–June or September–October (hot but bearable, and the sea is warm). Getting around: buses serve the main resorts and Lindos, but a rental car unlocks the quieter west coast and ancient sites.
Day 1 — the Medieval Old Town
Palace of the Grand Master. Start at the restored Gothic palace of the Knights of St John, with Roman mosaics and grand vaulted halls, then walk the cobbled Street of the Knights — one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval avenues, lined with the inns of the Knightly tongues.
Deeper history. The Archaeological Museum in the Knights’ Hospital holds the famous Aphrodite of Rhodes; nearby, Kahal Shalom is Greece’s oldest synagogue, at the heart of the moving Jewish Quarter.
Sunset — Mandraki Harbour. Wander to the old harbour guarded by the bronze deer statues, where the Colossus of Rhodes is said to have stood. Dinner in the Old Town at romantic Marco Polo Cafe or fish taverna Hatzikelis by the walls.
Day 2 — Lindos & the east coast
Acropolis of Lindos. A dramatic clifftop acropolis crowned by the Temple of Athena Lindia, high above a car-free maze of white sugar-cube houses and captains’ mansions. Climb early — it’s brutal by midday.
Lunch in Lindos. Mavrikos, an institution on the main square since 1933, blends refined Greek cooking with island produce; Kalypso has a rooftop framing the acropolis.
Afternoon swim — St Paul’s Bay. A near-enclosed lagoon of clear water beneath the acropolis, said to be where St Paul landed. Or push north to snorkel the emerald water of Anthony Quinn Bay.
Day 3 — nature & the coast
Valley of the Butterflies. A shaded stream valley where thousands of Jersey tiger moths gather in summer among storax trees and waterfalls — cool even in the heat.
Kallithea Springs. Restored 1920s thermal-spa domes and mosaics beside turquoise coves — a favourite swim and photo spot.
Beach or ruins. Laze on golden Tsambika below its clifftop monastery, or history buffs can add Ancient Kamiros, the “Pompeii of Rhodes” terraced down the west coast.

- Tsambika — a long sweep of golden sand and shallow turquoise water on the east coast.
- Anthony Quinn Bay — a tiny rocky cove of vivid emerald water, great for snorkelling.
- St Paul’s Bay — a sheltered lagoon beneath Lindos Acropolis.
- Prasonisi — the windswept southern tip where two seas meet, a world-class windsurf spot.
